Ophelia is a non-Coda member of Pax's crew. She is Eli's long-lost childhood friend who shares his background as a post-Broadcast Anomal from Nevada's underground school.
History[]
Before the heist[]
Ophelia was born in around 2003, but as a child, she was raised in a secret Justice school. She befriended a younger boy, Eli, and assuaged his fears by making a Bituman doll for him. At one point, Ophelia had a different name, but changed to her current one as a prank on one of the teachers, Mr. Garvey. She also picked that name because it came from Shakespeare's Hamlet, a story that she and Eli enjoyed together. Ophelia and Eli were subjected to the whispering room, which granted them the power of Vox. However, Ophelia and Eli noticed that kids who displayed powers are transferred to another facility, never to be heard from again, so they hid their powers from the facility wardens. Eventually, the two of them were sent to separate Justice schools regardless, though Ophelia left and ventured into the Great Plains Exclusion Zone (GPEZ) in search of the Tree of Tongues, which she often saw in her dreams and nightmares.
Issue 6: The Bad Lands[]
Ophelia is unable to find the Tree or escape, which, along with an Echo, causes her to believe she is in literal Hell and that anyone she meets is a demon giving her false hope. However, she takes interest in Girl and Pax when it turns out they are looking for the Tree too. When a pair of Justice officers try to arrest Pax, Ophelia uses her Vocal to knock them out, but her flimsy control causes Pax to take some friendly fire. While walking to the Kennedy Institute, Ophelia fails to recognize Eli and debates with him about her belief that everyone is in Hell. The group fights through an army of bionic creatures and climb to the top of the Kennedy Institute, where they find a giant squid that is passive towards them but antagonistic towards Justice. Using an illusionary keytar from Eli, Ophelia helps the group appease the squid with music. A bionic creature takes the group into a whispering room containing a small crystalline tree, which Ophelia and Girl can somehow hear whispers from. After Pax touches the crystal tree and frees the real Tree of Tongues from Justice's control, Ophelia's Echo disappears, allowing her to regain her rationality. She finally recognizes Eli, hugs him, and agrees to join the crew.
At Camp Oakwood, Eli and Ophelia recount how they messed with Mr. Garvey by changing their names, but get confused on Ophelia's nickname, causing Girl to laugh. When Eli states he has no experience with kids other than being one, Ophelia states she does not remember being one due to how long her time in GPEZ felt. She states that she lost track of time in that place and does not remember clearly what happened between her school days and GPEZ.
Issue 7: Let There Be Light[]
In Iowa, Ophelia plays Crypts and Cultists with Pax, Ziggy, and Eli at the bus's table. The bus suffers from heat shield damage, and if two Justice officers pull over the crew due to the crew's prior dialogue choices, Ophelia can use her Vocal to attack the officers. Regardless of whether or not that encounter happens, the crew stops near an abandoned house and Ophelia waits near the front porch for Pax and Girl to unlock the house. Ophelia then gets infected by an Echo again and loses control of her Vocal, causing pain to everyone nearby. Although Pax removes the Echo and Sol soothes Ophelia's pain, Ophelia feels guilty about hurting her friends and thinks she should leave the crew, with Sai and Noam taking this position, and Eli, Theo, Sol wanting her to stay with the crew. This increases tension among the crew and leads Girl to propose a hide-and-seek game to cool everyone off, with Ophelia hiding behind a hay bale in the barn. At the dinner table, Ophelia is brought up to speed about the Puritans as an enemy faction and listens to the original crew's retelling of the heist in Purity. Remembering the story causes Sai to become angry at the crew's lack of concern for the danger of their quest, and then leave the crew. Ophelia and the crew look for Sai outside, but the latter is long gone.
Issue 9: Rotown[]
In Rotown, Ophelia asks Pax about the latter's argument with Noam, as well as their past on-off relationship. When Justice attacks, Ophelia flees to the getaway truck with the others, though Pax returns with a grievous stab wound.
Issue 10: The Maine Event[]
In New York City, Ophelia waits with the rest of the crew in Ruth's getaway van for Sai, Ziggy, and Eli to rescue Pax. At a motel, Ophelia tells Eli his impression of Noam sounds like CT, which makes the situation awkward, so the two change the subject by asking about Jacob. At Betty's Diner, Ophelia, Ziggy, and Eli compete over who is the robot's favorite customer, and Eli notes that Ophelia might count due to spending a lot of time in with the Betty in Lebanon. However, Ophelia finds Lebanon's Betty to be unsettling due to her lack of maintenance affecting her memory. At Schoodic Point, the crew splits into two groups, with Ophelia teaming up with Pax, Ziggy, and Eli to distract the main forces of the Puritans and Justice. She, Ziggy, and Eli get immobilized by the Adjunct, but Pax manages to win and free them. After an encounter with the Overseer and Axiom at the docks, Ophelia decides to trust in Eli and go wherever his Coda takes him.
Ending[]
Ophelia has no Coda of her own, so she follows Eli in his own Coda.
- In the Optimist Coda, Ophelia goes to Nova Scotia with Eli and Girl in the hopes that she can be cured of her unwanted Vocals.
- In the Realist Coda, Ophelia and Girl go with Eli on his quest to expose Justice's Anomal experiments to the media.
- In the Blood Coda, Ophelia and Girl join Eli in his cross-country trip to look for the families they were separated from.
Appearance[]
Ophelia has long black hair and brown eyes. She wears a dark gray hoodie with yellow text printed on it, gray cargo pants, and black boots. While surviving in the Great Plains Exclusion Zone, she wears a gas mask, an old rose colored backpack, and a white bandage wrapped over her injured right knee.
Personality[]
In her childhood, Ophelia was a caring big sister figure to Eli and helped him cope with their frightening situation, but also understood the danger enough to warn him to hide his powers from Justice. However, her time alone in the Great Plains Exclusion Zone and her Echo infection caused her to become more jaded and paranoid, feeling like there is no hope in escaping her predicament. She fears that her uncontrollable powers will hurt the people around her, but she also believes in Eli's promises to save her, which is why she follows him regardless of his Coda path.
Abilities[]
Physical abilities[]
Ophelia went through combat training in a Justice school and wields a spear.
Vocal[]
Ophelia's Vocal transmits her mental pain to the enemy, and can even kill them with enough concentrated pain, though her pain always comes back. However, she cannot control her power easily, especially if an Echo infects her and magnifies her pain.
