Liberty (also known as Camp Liberty) is an anarcho-primitivist commune located in a forested area near Crescent Lake in Oregon, American Republic. It is made up of several women. Notable members of Liberty include Annie, Rosa, Fred, Ziggy, and Pax before she was exiled to Pacifica. The commune used to be led by Rosa and Annie, but after Rosa's death, Annie became its sole leader.

History[]

Before the Broadcast[]

Camp Liberty was originally Camp Cedar, an old Justice re-education camp for children. There are many artifacts left over from that period such as signs with rules, nameplates and Justice-related robots.

Establishment of Camp Liberty[]

Many people were left as refugees after the broadcast and Camp Liberty was founded by Annie and Rosa as an anarcho-primitivist commune, which took in many orphaned children and other individuals. Ziggy and Pax would find their way to Camp Liberty during this period. At one point, the commune had a population of over a hundred people. Most members of Liberty practiced Catholicism and were hospitable to Anomals.

Rosa's death[]

After Rosa died, many of the commune's best craftspeople left, resulting in the commune struggling to make ends meet. Through Annie's leadership, they started growing poppies to make medicine to sell to other communes who need them as morphine. They bought guns to protect themselves and got Ziggy to build and maintain robots to maintain and harvest the fields. These changes did not sit well with the commune's members due to the commune's anarcho-primitivist roots. They believed it invited unwarranted risk and sought to return to the good old days that they remember. The social tensions and fear caused the residents to turn to worshipping Jane of the Void in order to seek solace.

Issue 2: Ghosts[]

Cold welcome[]

On October 14, 2030, Pax and her crew arrive in Liberty in in order to recruit Ziggy and pick up the ME-EM, only to find it far different from how she remembered it. The crew could not get anyone to come to the gate to unlock it, so Pax unveiled the secret entrance hole. This caused a TOLBOI robot to show up and intimidate the crew, only for the driver robot to show up. The driver robot experiences a glitch that causes them to think the tour bus needs to be repaired, causing the TOLBOI to pick up the robot and throw them to the ground. Theo and Sai carry the broken robot back to the bus while Pax and Noam attempt to enter the secret hole. Noam goes through first, only to be accosted by Fred, who points a gun while accusing the two of intruding. If Pax fails to properly explain herself or agitates Fred too much, the latter will shoot Noam's mechanical arm, but if Pax succeeds in reminding Fred of her identity, Fred expresses her disdain for Pax and lets the two go through while remaining wary.

Pax opens the gate from the other side to let Theo and Sai through and talks to Noam about the unease among the residents, who distrust Anomals despite their past acceptance of the latter. Pax walks through the central area and reminisces about Liberty, but is surprised to see her former peers worship a large metal effigy of a pagan deity, Jane of the Void. Pax can ask Sai to pull a hatchet to prove herself worthy of being a queen, only for Sai to pull so hard that the hatchet gets stuck in a nearby tree. Pax can ask Fred for directions, but the latter is rude and Pax has the option of either using Vox to assert her dominance or continuing to peacefully ask questions.

Reunion with Annie[]

In the residential area, Pax finds Annie mourning near Rosa's grave. Annie asks why Pax did not show up for Rosa's funeral, with Pax pointing out that moving across the border is nigh-impossible without papers. The two sit on the bench and discuss the current state of Liberty. Pax is shocked that Annie would grow opium, but Annie justifies this as a necessary method for maintaining the commune's economy while also providing other communes with painkilling supplies that they otherwise cannot obtain. Pax asks why Annie and Rosa sent her away, and Annie states that it was to keep Pax off Justice's radar while potentially giving her new opportunities in Pacifica. When Pax asks about her belongings, Annie tells her that her items are in Ziggy's cabin and that the key is in a nearby arcade machine. Annie is evasive about what exactly she and Rosa told see about Pax's exile. Inside the cabin, Pax reminisces about her rocky past relationship with Ziggy and finds several items, such as her old jacket, a picture of her and Ziggy, and the ME-EM cartridge.

Reunion with Ziggy[]

On the way to the school area, Pax notices that people are more paranoid than usual, and some residents want to leave because of the distrust. At the schoolhouse, Annie tells Noam embarrassing stories about Pax and explains that she wants to set up a bell to alert the residents of emergencies. Sai raises the schoolhouse bell using her strength, but becomes too tired to move afterwards. Pax reminisces about another falling out she had with Ziggy. Pax can return to the central area to talk to Theo, who is worried about running late for the scheduled gig at Pete's Pool Hall. Back at the schoolhouse area, Pax goes through a hole in the wall to find Ziggy at the sisters' old hideout. Ziggy condemns Pax for running away from home and not contacting her, and then runs off to the kitchen. Fred and Annie get into an argument, with the former stating the need for more guns in case of Justice and Anomals, while also worrying about opium making the commune a target. Pax questions Annie about Ziggy's accusations, but Annie avoids saying why Ziggy believes Pax ran away. Annie explains that Fred is unhappy with the changes that Annie made to Liberty, but Annie continues to justify these changes as necessary for the residents' survival.

Kitchen confrontation[]

Pax finds the kitchen locked and can either ask Theo to lockpick the door or ask Sai to force the door open. In the kitchen, Ziggy uses her speed to constantly move away from Pax, and Pax can either use Vox to make Ziggy stop moving or continue to call out to her without using any powers. Pax tries to tell Ziggy that their mothers sent her away and that she did not run, but Ziggy insists that their moms said Pax ran away. Ziggy refuses Pax's offer to leave Liberty and join the crew, and the two accuse each other of clinging to the past. Pax tells Ziggy that the robot driver needs fixing, and Ziggy agrees to help with repairs, but nothing more than that. When Pax asks for the ME-EM, Ziggy accuses her of only caring about that device and hands it back to her while leaving in a huff.

Echo hunting[]

When Pax leaves the kitchen, Fred angrily accuses Pax of conspiring against Liberty and putting voices in her head. She pushes Pax down the stairs, causing Pax to realize that Echoes have returned to Liberty and that many residents are infected. Annie points a gun at Fred and her posse in order to get them to leave Pax alone. Annie states the "ghosts" started showing up after Rosa's death, as if her leadership was the only thing keeping them away. She laments that without Rosa, the residents lost faith in Catholicism and turned to Jane of the Void. Pax argues that Ziggy should leave Liberty now that the place is falling into disarray, but Annie insists Ziggy belongs in Liberty. The two agree that Pax needs to solve the Echo problem using the ME-EM. While recording Echoes, Pax runs into a Protolanguage squid, which she fights at the outdoor theatre in order to claim the latter's Echo. Sai is shocked by the sonic explosions caused by the Echoes and Pax explains to her how the Echoes work.

Fred's mob[]

In the residential area, Fred leads a mob against Annie in the name of Liberty's old ideals, and removing the Echo is not enough to stop her crusade. Pax has to use the Discord Vocal to sow doubt among Fred's followers about Fred's motives, putting an end to Fred's plans while also leaving Fred distraught. Annie laments how her methods created discontent for the Echoes to exploit, and Pax can choose whether or not to convince Annie to forgive Fred. Annie agrees that after all that has transpired in Liberty, Ziggy should leave with Pax in hopes of a better life. At around the same time, Sai learns that one of Fred's allies, Moon, called Justice earlier in order to report the Anomals within the crew and blame Annie for harboring them, so Sai covers that up by telling Justice that Moon lied and that Liberty has a drug operation. Sai also tells Justice to hold off on raiding Liberty until the evening in the hopes that the crew can leave Liberty and evacuate the citizens before the raid begins.

End of Liberty[]

Pax goes to the baseball shed, where Ziggy completes repairs on the robot. Pax attempts to reconcile with Ziggy, but her pleas fall on deaf ears. Justice arrives earlier than Sai expected, destroys Liberty's poppy fields, and declares their intent to arrest the residents. Pax, Ziggy, and Sai fight off the initial wave of officers, as well as a reactivated Junior Justice robot. The residents are forced to seek refuge in other communes in order to evade Justice, effectively ending Liberty. At Rosa's grave, Annie tells Ziggy the truth about Pax's exile and states that she lied in order to protect Ziggy's feelings, which angers Ziggy, who still refuses to forgive Pax for failing to contact her. Pax can choose to reassure her family that Rosa is in their hearts, but Ziggy and Annie tell Pax that her words are uncharacteristically corny, though both agree with the sentiment. Ziggy joins the crew on their journey to Nova Scotia and Annie gives her daughters one last hug before the bus leaves for Knapper Campground. Ziggy continues to stay in touch with Annie over the public video phones to receive updates on the former residents' situation.

Physical description[]

Outside the walls[]

A distance away from the main gate, there is a metal barrier gate that is painted green, but with rust spots all over. The sign on the gate has the text "PRIVATE PROPERTY" and "STAY OUT!". There is a large sign depicting trees on a white background, and a Junior Justice image on the right side of the sign. There is a green ribbon across the top of the sign, with "Welcome to CAMP CEDAR" printed in light green. "LEARNING FOR A LIFETIME" is printed in dark letters on a light background. The text "FASCIST PIGS" is handwritten on the bottom-left corner of the sign as a show of defiance against the camp's previous owners. There are several blue poles with cameras at the very top, but they are all defunct.

Outside the main gate and baseball field fence, there are two defunct Junior Justice robots, with the one near the fence being more intact than the one near the gate. The Junior Justice head near the main gate has the text "JUSTICE IS DEAD" on its right earpiece and "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS" on its face. The main gate itself is made of wood, but is reinforced by metal at the bottom. The top of the gate a circular emblem with a tree-like engraving, along with the text "CAMP CEDAR EST 200" engraved near the circumference. Behind the circular emblem is a two-part sign with the "CAMP LIBERTY" on the top part and "LIBERTY FOR ALL" on the bottom part. In both texts, "LIBERTY" is painted over "CEDAR" and "JUSTICE" to show that Justice is no longer in control of this location. Each of the two doors has half of a yellow pagan symbol associated with Jane of the Void, with the two halves being united when the doors are closed. The left door has the text "PRIVATE PROPERTY", while the right door says "NO TRESPASSERS". To left of the gate is a blue video phone, a cooler box, a white plastic chair, a rusted barrel, an orange pitcher, two wooden planks, a bush, and a metal sheet. The metal sheet conceals a hidden entrance, which can be opened by pulling a chain.

Central area[]

Near the secret entrance, there is a yellow and a brown truck for trading supplies with other communes, a green dumpster, and a gray trash can with wheels. Further inside the central area, there are several camera poles, wooden buildings, trees, a bulletin board, a kitchen and cafeteria building, wooden picnic tables, a giant steel effigy of Jane of the Void, pumpkins, several worker robots, wood watchtowers painted in white, several charms shaped like Jane's symbol, several poles and wires to suspend light bulbs, and an outdoor auditorium that is mostly made of wood. Near the effigy, there are wooden staircases leading to the upper residential and schoolhouse areas, with a small wooden gate on the schoolhouse stairs. Behind one of the buildings is a staircase leading to the baseball field, with the entrance to that being a chain link fence gate.

Upper residential area[]

The upper residential area has a chicken coop, two outhouses, pumpkins, crops, a campfire with wooden benches, wooden crates, beer cans, and a fence and gate leading to Rosa's grave. In the graveyard, there is a bench and a view of the commune's opium poppy field. Rosa's gravemarker is built from several stones, has several candles, and a portrait of her. The poppy field has a radio mast, a yellow and brown barn, and a TOLBOI worker robot.

On the outside, Ziggy's cabin has a row of solar panels on the roof, a propane tank, a gas generator, a blue plastic basket containing small machines, a small table with tools, and a broken arcade cabinet. The inside of the cabin contains a working Paddlepong cabinet, a dart targetboard, a couch, a small green table, a cooler box, a loose floorboard for storing items, a bunk bed, a bookshelf with a radio, a drawer, a pink tape recorder and player, and blue interior walls.

Schoolhouse area[]

The schoolhouse is built with mostly red-painted wood, though the porch uses white paint. The inside of the schoolhouse has blue interior walls, a chalkboard, animal drawings for each letter of the alphabet, an analog clock, a projector, a protractor, a triangle ruler, at least 31 student desks, several rolls of paper sheets, and one teacher desk.

The outside has a swing set, a wooden picnic bench, several planters for crops, a playground carousel, a see-saw, a rusted slide, camera towers, a wooden tower for hoisting a bell, and a radio on a cooler box. There is a hole in the wall leading to Pax and Ziggy's hideout, a wooden playground structure.

Baseball field[]

The barn from the poppy field connects to the baseball field. There is a tractor, blue scoreboard, four bases, a pile of baseballs, a trailer, a picnic table, a dumpster, flammable barrels, mounds of junk, tire stacks, a pond, and Ziggy's workshop. The workshop is built from white bricks and uses both metal sheets and wood for the roof. The workshop contains various tools, several toolboxes, a tool cart, a green bench grinder, lockers, metal shelves, a sink, a red hose, a workbench, a green oxygen cylinder, a red gas cylinder, and several stools.
